A rapid means of assessing the germination potential and quality of a seed lot can be obtained using the ISTA tetrazolium test. The TZ test reveals potential germination percentages based strictly on internal seed condition.

Microscopic examination of stained embryos makes evaluation of the embryo possible, and seed deterioration, heat damage during drying, or mechanical damage can be detected.

The TZ test is useful in evaluating dormant seed lots at harvest, or seed lots which require long or uncertain testing periods due to disease or dormancy problems.

It is used very successfully to evaluate brassica seeds (Oilseed rape) in the limited period between harvest and sowing where a traditional germination test is too slow to produce results in time to facilitate early seed treatment and sowing of the seed.

The TZ test is vastly superior in terms of reliability to the quick tetrazolium test (Vitascope Test). The results are available within a 24 hour period of receipt of the sample.

Burlinghams(Seed Analysis) Ltd is now licensed by defra to carry out tetrazolium tests for certification purposes on all categories and levels of wheat, barley and oats.
